Teeth Whitening

Whether you are self-conscious because you have yellowed dark-brown teeth from smoking or drinking tea, coffee and red wine or if you just want to look your best, teeth whitening is a sure way to brighten your smile and gain increased confidence in your appearance. There are several ways of bleaching:

1. Home Teeth Whitening
Dr. Bui can take imprints (impressions) of your teeth to make custom-fitted upper  and lower trays for you to take home to complete the teeth whitening process. Patient will be instructed to place the bleaching gels in the trays and wear them for one hour after dinner each night for 2-3 weeks depending the darkness of the teeth. Teeth sensitivity and gum irritation are common side-effects.

2. Office Zoom Teeth Whitening

45 minutes: Dr. Bui will isolate upper and lower teeth by covering the gums and retracting the lips. Patient will be in a reclined and relaxed position with music headphones.

1 hour: Zoom bleaching gels will be applied on the teeth. Then the ARC light is used in conjunction with the Zoom gel (the light source projecting to the gelled teeth - 3 to 4 fifteen minutes applications) to accelerate and amplify the tooth whitening process.  Less teeth sensitivity and gum discomfort with quicker results (1 day compared to 14 days home treatment).

3.  Office Laser Teeth Whitening
30 minutes: Dr. Bui will isolate the teeth from the gums and the lips . Patient will be in a relaxed position with more comfortable cheek and lips retraction.  30 minutes: Powder/liquid gels will be applied on the teeth. Then the Laser   Pulsating Beam will be projected each quadrant 30 seconds. After, we let the Powder/gel seat on the teeth for 3 minutes. We can repeat 2-6 applications.  Less teeth sensitivity with fastest results (1 hour procedure).  The above procedures are the most effective ways of bleaching and are best performed under Dr. Bui's supervision to ensure the safest results which can last to 2-3 years depending patients' smoking habits and beverages intake.

There are also other over-the-counter teeth whitening products available, much less expensive but the results last only few weeks and their safety is not reliable without professional supervision.

Teeth Bondings

Cosmetic dental bondings, also known as composites are excellent ways to fix structural imperfections in the teeth such as cracks, chips and discolored teeth as well as to replace silver amalgam fillings.
The bondings can also repair misaligned teeth, providing a straighter, more uniform smile.
To begin the teeth bonding procedure, OC cosmetic dentist Dr. Bui selects a composite resin (dental bonding material) that matches the natural shade of your teeth. Dr. Bui then roughens the existing tooth so the resin can adhere properly.

Next, the composite resin is carefully applied to the tooth, shaped, and smoothed to achieve the desired look. It is then quickly hardened via a high intensity light.

Lastly, the bonded tooth is buffed and polished so it has the same appearance as the surrounding teeth.
This procedure is quick, affordable, relatively painless, and reversible but not long lasting. Dental bondings are alternatives to more extensive less permanent Cosmetic dentistry treatment with porcelain veneers and all porcelain crowns.

Many insurance carriers cover teeth bonding, especially if it is done for structural reasons.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain dental veneers are a beautiful way to correct stained, chipped, or crooked teeth. By placing thin layers of glass-like ceramic porcelain on the surface of the teeth, Newport Beach cosmetic dentist Dr. Bui can provide patients with bright, straight, and natural looking smiles.

Each patient's situation is unique - some may need many porcelain veneers and some may need only a few.

The smile can be rejuvenated with porcelain veneers. Patient will look much younger!  Your first appointment will be the consultation of the treatment plan which includes the Pre-op Nikon pictures and Pre-op diagnostic models impressions for Diagnostic Wax-Ups of future veneers with temporaries-putty matrix, needed during the veneers preparations appointment (following visit). Smile guide and shade with characterizations will be selected.

Your second appointment will be the day Dr. Bui will do the preparations of all the veneers (sometimes a combination of veneers, cosmetic crowns and bridges at the same time - extreme smile makeover case) after the preview of the Diagnostic Wax Ups of future cosmetic restorations. The veneer preparations mean conservative reductions or removals of the front part of the teeth involved. The wafer-thin porcelain veneers will eventually be set in place of these reduced enamels. A mold is then taken of your teeth. From this mold, each porcelain veneer will be custom made to fit the tooth and complement your smile.

The porcelain veneers are then placed on your teeth in your third, and final, office visit with your approval of course before the cementations. At this time, Dr. Bui will be able to precisely match the color of your dental veneers to your surrounding teeth. After the fit and the color of your veneers are ensured to be to your liking, the adhesive is hardened using a special light. You then have a bright, long-lasting Smile with you new porcelain veneers. Lastly, the occlusion needs to be adjusted.
Nikon post-op pictures will then be taken....

The glass-like ceramic that forms a porcelain veneer closely resembles natural tooth Enamel which is translucent.

If you are considering porcelain veneers as a smile makeover, then please call us for a free consultation ........949- 675 7750.

All Porcelain Crowns

For teeth that are severely damaged, fractured, dental crowns can be an effective treatment option. The crown procedure utilizes tooth-shaped coverings made of ceramic or porcelain to restore strength and eliminate discomfort. In addition, crowns may be used to anchor a dental bridge or to cap a dental implant post (abutment).

The dental crown is usually completed in two stages.

During the first stage, Dr. Bui reduces portions of your natural tooth's structure to accommodate the dental crown. Surrounding teeth may also be prepared in this way. An impression is made and sent to the lab, where your crown is created in about two weeks. A temporary crown will be in place between visits to ensure the most natural look and feel. When you return to Dr. Bui's office, the temporary crown is removed and your new, custom dental crown is securely bonded in place.

The cosmetic full porcelain crowns create an extremely natural-looking appearance and are typically used on front teeth. The tooth-colored ceramic material used in porcelain crowns is translucent, like the enamel of your natural teeth, and size and shade can be carefully matched to complement the rest of your smile.

Other types of dental crowns like Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM) and Full Metal Crowns.
PFM crowns have metal substructure as a coping with porcelain overlay. They are stronger than Full Porcelain Crowns . they are designed mainly for back chewing molars. However, their metal shell gives PFM crowns an opaque appearance.

Because they lack the reflective quality of natural teeth, PFMs are not as discrete as all ceramic or porcelain crowns.

Metal crowns are extremely durable and can be applied with less removal of the natural tooth structure than all ceramic or PFM crowns. Metal crowns may consist of various materials, including gold alloy, palladium, nickel alloy or chromium alloy. They are designed mainly for chewing molars with conservative preparation required.

To find out what crowns you need, please call 949-675 7750 for a free consultation.

Tooth colored fillings

They are safer and more attractive alternatives to older silver Amalgam fillings.

Due to the possible Mercury toxicity from the silver fillings, our Newport Beach cosmetic dentist Dr. Bui has stopped doing dark visible amalgam fillings but instead, has encouraged patients to have natural tooth colored, mercury metal free white fillings.

White fillings can either be composite or ceramic. Both options look and feel the same as your natural teeth after few days.

Composite restoration is a very common material used for white fillings.  Those composite restorations are the most often used material to replace metallic black silver fillings and are quickly becoming one of the most commonly used materials in cosmetic dentistry. They are used to close gaps in the teeth, to fix and repair chips, gaps and cracks in the teeth, as well as restoring the size or color of a tooth.

A Composite restoration can be placed in just one visit. To place it, cosmetic dentist Dr. Bui will begin by preparing the tooth. This involves removal of the decay or old defective silver filling, a thorough cleaning, followed by materials that will protect the tooth and increase the strength of the bond. Dr. Bui then places the composite material onto your tooth, which is hardened by a special curing light.

Ceramic tooth colored fillings on the other hand are more durable and stronger for chewing because they are made by porcelain and processed in the dental lab.

They are called porcelain inlays if the restorations are within the cusps (projections) of the teeth - for smaller fillings.

They are called porcelain onlays if the restorations involve the cusp or cusps - for larger fillings involving fractured cusp.

INSTANT ORTHODONTICS

This procedure can transform a crooked, uneven smile to one that's straight, even and white in only  2-3 visits, without the use of metal braces.

This is done with the artistic application of porcelain veneers.

Porcelain veneers are thin shells of fired porcelain that are placed on the front surfaces of the teeth. Offering a natural look and feel, veneers allow the cosmetic dentist to dramatically change the length, width, color and shape of a tooth.

Restoring teeth to their natural beauty, veneers also resist staining, creating an enduring white, bright straight smile.

Why spend years enduring the discomfort and unattractive look of braces when instant orthodontics can change your smile in a fraction of the time?

BALANCED BITE WITH NEUROMUSCULAR DENTISTRY

If you have noticed you teeth look worn down or short, you have headaches or jaw pain, you may be suffering from a "Bad Bite". Just like the tires on the car, if they are not aligned properly, teeth out of balance can lead to excessive wear and breakage. Dr. Bui can do some simple tests to check for this. A Balanced Bite cannot only help your teeth and dental work last longer, but can make you look younger by relaxing the muscles in your face.

Did you know that the way your teeth come together can cause headaches, pain in the jaw, sore muscles, neck pain, limited range of motion of the neck, upper and lower back pain, poor posture, pressure behind the eyes, stuffy ears, ringing in the ears, grinding teeth, breaking teeth, dizziness, vertigo, fatigue, and more.

All these symptoms can be due to a bite being off by less than a millimeter.
With the advanced dental training from L.V.I, the world's premier post-graduate Teaching Center and from U.C.S.F graduate studies, Dr. Bui learned how to identify and potentially alleviate these conditions to bring patients to a more comfortable life through neuromuscular dentistry.
Neuromuscular dentistry is a modern advancement based on the understanding that the temporomandibular jaw joints (T.M.J) need to be in an ideal comfortable resting position for the best comfort of the joints, muscles, bones and teeth.

This comfortable position is based on the guidance of muscles and stabilized by the bite position of both the upper and lower teeth.

The Myotronics K7 is available in our office and is the most advanced piece of computerized diagnostic equipment used for diagnosing medical conditions attributed to a bad bite (malocclusion). "Bite Disease" and T.M.J disorders can be effectively detected, measured, and treated using computerized electronics. Yes, dentistry has come a long way!

Dental Implants for missing teeth

They provide  a permanent solution for replacing a single tooth, several teeth, or all  your teeth. They are among the most successful invasive dental treatment options available.

A complete dental implant procedure is composed of 3 components and is usually completed in 2 phases by 2 dentists- phase 1 an oral surgeon specialist or a periodontist is doing the surgical placement of the implant (1st component) in the jawbone and phase 2 after 3-5 months of healing the general dentist is doing the placement of the abutment (post screwed to the implant - 2nd component) followed with the cementation of the lab processed implant crown (3rd component).

Personally, because of the limitation of knowledge and experience of a general dentist, I feel it is better for the patient's best interest to let the specialist do the phase 1 to avoid possible complications. Then phase 2 can be done effectively by the general dentist.

Therefore, fortunately, I am able to have for the last 6 years, Dr. Caden Lim, a certified board periodontist as an associate in my office. He has performed all my surgical implants placement. For extra personal attention to the patients, Dr. Bui has been always there to assist Dr. Lim.

Benefits of Implant Dentistry:

  • Strong, Durable and Natural in appearance.
  • High success rate- above 95 %.
  • Permanent solution- dentures and bridges require replacement.
  • Easily maintained- same manner as natural teeth.
  • Preserves healthy teeth- healthy adjacent teeth aren't harmed or affected since neighboring teeth are not used for support as they are for bridges.
  • Comfortable way to anchor removable denture or bridge.

Are you a good candidate for dental implants?

  • General good health- if you are well enough for routine dental treatment, you are a Candidate for dental implants, as long as there is enough Healthy jawbone.
  • Age- dental implants are an ideal option regardless of age, whether you are young, middle-aged or a senior. Implants are usually postponed in children till the Jawbone has matured.
  • Dentures- anchoring with dental implants provides greater stability and better function.  Or, They can be converted to fixed 12 unit bridges upperand lower with 4 upper and 4 lower implants (all-on-4 Nobel Biocare: most recent Technique compared to 6-8 implants of each arch with bone and sinus grafts).
  • Smoking- while being a non smoker increases the success rate, smoking does not eliminate the possibility of receiving dental implants.
  • Commitment to dental hygiene- implants have a 95% success rate when the patient is committed to good dental hygiene.  Daily brushing and flossing, along with routine Dental exams, helps ensure that implants can last a lifetime.

Sedation Dentistry

It allows you to comfortably undergo everything from a simple cleaning to extensive dental treatment. For those with severe dental anxiety and phobia, dental oral conscious sedation in conjunction with nitrous oxide can be the answer to receiving the dental care you need.

The process starts with using a prescribed sedative pill the night before the 1st appointment to get a good night's sleep. Your companion will bring you to the office. Additional medications will be provided to create the ultimate in relaxation.

Your experienced sedation team will monitor you throughout your entire visit.

We monitor each patient with a computerized pulse oximeter, which measures heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturation. We also have a reversal agent on hand that reverses the effect of the sedation medicine in less than 30 seconds.

You can still respond to verbal commands and the effects of dental sedation last between 2-4 hours, so we require you to have a companion drive you home and stay with you until you're completely recovered from your sedation medication.

You are going home with your new smile.

The next day, you will feel no discomfort or residual effects from the dental visit and you will have very little memory of the appointment (amnesia quality).

The sedation enhances effectiveness of anesthetic, decreases gagging and joint/muscle soreness. It allows more treatment to be provided in a shorter time, which could decrease total number of visits.

So, if you have been delayed treatment you need and want due to your dental Phobia, then sedation dentistry is for you. Call 949 - 675 7750 for a free consultation.

FRESH BREATH SYSTEM- BREATH RX

The Breath Rx Management System was developed to make long-term bad breath treatment easy, convenient and effective.

Most people think that bad breath is a result of what's going on in our stomachs.
But that's not the whole story. The actual odor of halitosis is generated by bacteria that thrive in the mouth under the gums, and in the nooks and crannies on the teeth and the surface of the tongue. Left untreated, these bacteria create volatile sulfur compounds (VSC's) that have a characteristic "rotten egg" smell.

That is precisely what the BREATH RX system is designed to do give you pleasant smelling breath.
Americans spend over a billion dollars each year on over-the-counter products that do not eliminate bad breath. While most mouthwash products mask bad breath, few are effective after a few hours. None of them will manage Chronic Halitosis.

The System consists of products which represent a total approach to the daily management of bad breath and improved oral health. Combining the mechanics of daily tongue deplaquing with antibacterial agents, will result in long- lasting fresh breath as well as decrease the bacteria associated  with plaque and gingivitis.

Breath RX products contain Zytex, an exclusive complex containing zinc chloride, Eucalyptus oil and thymol. Zytex is proven to first neutralize volatile sulfur compounds (VSC's), a major cause of oral malodor, then kill the gram negative, anaerobic bacteria associated with VSC production.

Advised steps :
Brush with breath RX  Purifying toothpaste and floss teeth.
Scrape with tongue scraper and antibacterial tongue spray to clean center and sides of tongue.
Rinse for 30 seconds with breath RX antibacterial Mouth rinse.
Refresh with Breath RX  sugar free mints, chewing gum and anti-5 bacterial breath spray as needed.

Most of the over-the-counter mouthwashes contain alcohol that dries soft oral tissue, ultimately leading to even faster formation of odor causing bacteria.
In addition, mouthwashes that contain more than 25% acolhol can increase the risk of oral and pharyngeal cancers by about 50%.
With 100% alcohol-free Breath RX outperforms other products that only mask Odor, because it eliminates the cause and neutralizes the resulting odors of halitosis.
For breath RX appointment and cleaning, please contact us at 949-675 7750

Ceramic inlays or onlays

Ceramic inlays and onlays require 2 visits:

1st visit, Dr. Bui will remove the decay or old defective silver black filling, do a thorough cleaning and he will take a mold or impression of the prepared tooth for the lab fabrication. Patient goes home with the temporary restoration.

2nd visit, Dr. Bui will remove the temporary and cement the final restoration from the lab, which will feel natural in few days.
Inlays and Onlays are conservative options of dental treatments. They help to conserve more tooth structure because their use requires minimal removal a tooth's surface. Perhaps their most important benefit, however, is that, in saving damaged teeth, onlays help patients avoid the eventual need for more extensive treatment with dental crowns, bridges or implants.

They can also be used to restore teeth that are cracked or fractured if the damage is not severe enough to require a dental crown.
So, if you are timid about opening your mouth because of visible ugly dark black metal fillings, then replacing your fillings with white resin or porcelain filling material may be for you... Call OC cosmetic dentist Dr. Timothy Bui 949-675 7750 For a free consultation.
